As part of a new tutorial I am creating about Advanced Character Modeling and Unlit Handpainting, I took the challenge of creating this new model!
This was easily the most involved handpainted model and texture I've made. Since the design contains a ton of detail I put a heavy emphasis on modeling everything as close to perfect as I could. This would help in the texturing stage later
Speaking of texturing, this character uses a UDIM workflow so the character wouldn't be limited by resolution. Maintaining my workflow of greyscale - greyscale paint - color gradient - color paint ( alternating between Substance Painter and 3DCoat ) allowed me to leverage the flexibility and strengths of both programs
I also used Blender and AutoRig Pro to set up a rig on the posed character and give it a simple idle animation
Implementation in both Marmoset and Unreal for final renders and presentation
I'll have more to share in the future as the tutorial comes to life and where to purchase it/ sign up for group mentorships in the future
Concept for this piece comes courtesy of the always amazing Tooth Wu

Process is king! It starts ugly and slowly gets better with time and effort
